Initial Conference

This forum brings together educators, philosophers, and psychologists in an interdisciplinary framework to identify ways in which the Modern Orthodox community can adopt transformative educational practices to elevate moral standards.

Between May and August 2021, the initial cohort will connect monthly in online seminars to explore the connection between the Modern Orthodox outlook and moral education, and identifying practical educational strategies to advance JMEF’s goals.

Our initial conference, to be held at The Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York, will explore Jewish philosophical approaches to ethics and their implications for Jewish education.

Presenters will discuss views on the ideal motivation for moral behaviour and identify areas in which a Torah approach to ethics differs from values commonly held in broader society.

Some of the topics include:

  • Is being a good person just about behavior?
  • What does the Torah tell us about ethics that we do not know from our own conscience?
  • Is self-esteem a Jewish value or a dangerous distraction?

Each presentation will be followed by a response from an experienced Jewish educator. These responses will be crucial in understanding the relevance of these initial philosophical discussions to existing educational and communal frameworks.
